Treadmill Running for a Flat Stomach

by on June 27, 2010

Running on a treadmill is a great way to exercise. While running outdoors is still the preferred way of exercising for most runners, running on a treadmill has advantages. For one a treadmill makes you independent from weather conditions and you can put in a quality run at any time of the day (or night). A treadmill run is also less taxing on your knees or your joints. A treadmill run also helps to run more consistent as it is easier to control the speed and a possible incline angle.

But can a treadmill run help you to get a flat stomach? Running is considered a cardio exercise. It offers certain health benefits. Running is also a workout that allows you to burn more fat in a comparable time with other workouts. However, as with any workout our bodies get smarter and smarter over time. The result is efficiency and that efficiency actually means that your body needs to burn less energy or fat to allow you to do the same run day after day.

So, how can you run on a treadmill and achieve the goal of having a flat stomach? The solution is to mix up running and either combine it with other physical exercise or to change how you run. What exactly does that mean? Instead of running for 45 minutes at the same speed start increasing your overall distance and the speed, too. As an example if you can run 5 miles in 45 minutes try to increase your mileage by 10% every month. It might be impossible for you to run 6 miles in 45 minutes and so the next logical step would be to increase the time you run. Just by adding 5 minutes to your workout routine will allow you to change how you run.

Other options are to increase speed and incline for certain parts of your run on a treadmill. After being warmed up, bump up the speed from (example) 7 Miles per hour to 8 mph for 1 minute. Then reduce the speed back to 7 mph, but add a 3% incline for 2 minutes and then switch back to a normal 7 mph run setup. If you can add several of these modifications to your run (and increase the adjustments, too) you will easily burn more calories when running on a treadmill. In general you should try to run on a treadmill for an hour or more when working out on a treadmill.

Another important thing to consider is to cross train. Running is not just about training your leg muscles. Running also requires a strong core of your body. You need to do abs workout exercises as well as train your back. A stronger core will allow you to run longer more easily and therefore increases the fun of running.

If you are interested in a full body workout that also helps you to show off with six pack abs, I can recommend a workout program that really works. It is less about running, but provides great diet information as well as abs exercises. As said it is a full body workout program with emphasis on six pack abs. I am using a modified version of this program as I like to run. A workout without running is not a workout for me, but since I know crap about ab exercises and how to do them correctly, this program is working great for me. It is not one of those diet or weight loss programs that promises to lose 200 lbs in 7 days (Ok, I am a little over board by saying this), it is a program that helps you make lifestyle changes that last. It provides cross training that I need as a runner. The author is a down to earth guy and you feel he really lives what he teaches. And best of all, this program is cheap ($39.95) and does not require any follow-up payments or the purchase of some stupid meal options. As an example, here you can read about certain vegetables that actually burn your body fat away. It is high quality stuff like this, that makes this program so successful for me.
